Sony World Photography Awards 2011

The Sony World Photography Awards is an international photography competition for amateurs and professional photographers.

With over 105 000 entries from 162 countries, this competition is quite popular.

Although my previous participations in this competition weren’t succesful, I decided to enter some images in this years competition.
It was especially the category “After Dark”, which had drawn my attention.

The shortlist for the 2011 Sony World Photography Awards was announced 1 February.
unfortunately none of my entered images were selected.

Much to my surprise I received an e-mail last week from the organisation:

“From a total of 51,878 photographs entered into the Open Competition alone, it was certainly a difficult decision for all our esteemed judges to narrow the many excellent entries down to a shortlist and we thank you for your hard work and commitment to capturing and submitting some amazing images.

Whilst you have not been shortlisted into the top 10 in each category your work has been selected for commendation which is given to the top 50 images in each category. The commended images will appear on the website in due course but, significantly, will also feature in the official 2011 Sony World Photography Awards Winner’s Book.

Well done.”

As I entered more than one image in this years competition I had no clue which image was selected for commendation.

Today the organisation published the commended images on their website.
This is the commended image:

Center for Railroad Photography & Art – 2011 Awards

This year was the first time that I participated in the 2011 Creative Photography Awards.

This, annual, photography contest is organised by the “Center for Railroad Photography & Art“.  The Center is an American, nonprofit arts organization that preserves and presents significant images of railroading.  Besides organising an annual photography contest, the center also publishes its own journal (Railroad Heritage) and organises exhibitions and conferences.

This years contest theme was: “A story in three photographs”

I entered following three photographs :

The results of the contest was recently announced.

I didn’t make it into the top three, but my entry was selected for recognition in the Center for Railroad Photography & Art’s 2011 Creative Photography Awards in the “Judge Also Liked” category.

As a reward my photographs will be published in the Center’s magazine “Railroad Heritage” and they will be exhibited, together with the photographs of the other winners, in the California State Railroad Museum.
